The importance of patient and consumer input into the Australian health technology assessment (HTA) processes and systems has been acknowledged in recent reports, including recommendations arising from a House of Representatives parliamentary inquiry (Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport, Parliament of Australia, The new frontier – delivering better health for all Australians. Parliament of Australia, 2021), a review of the National Medicines Policy (Department of Health and Aged Care, National medicines policy. Commonwealth of Australia, 2022) and a consultation on HTA involvement processes with patients. These reports provided the basis for further evolution of policy and practices. More recently, the HTA Policy and Methods Review (Department of Health and Aged Care, Health technology assessment policy and methods review. Commonwealth of Australia, 2024) and the Enhanced Consumer Engagement Process collaboration (Department of Health and Aged Care, Enhance HTA: an enhanced consumer engagement process in Australian health technology assessment – a report of recommendations. Commonwealth of Australia, 2024) included patient representatives or utilised a co-design process with patients, respectively. Both included extensive consultation with the public and patient and community organisations. Recommendations emerging from these projects have independently aligned and are aimed at increasing transparency and opportunities for patients to actively participate and be meaningfully involved in Australian HTA processes. Implementing change from these recommendations will signal the latest evolution of patient involvement in Australian HTA. Careful monitoring and review of these future reforms will be needed to ensure optimal impact from the work undertaken by many individuals and stakeholder groups on this journey to date.
