Written in timeline style: past, present, and future, the chapter reflects on Lake Singkarak’s natural and human dimensions to provide the background knowledge of the lake and the importance of developing a multisectoral decision support system. It elucidates the “wicked” problems encountered by the lake managers and their implications for current and future lake conditions. Understanding the evidence from the sediment coring, we highlight the lake’s natural tendency to undergo eutrophication, which directs the lake’s ecosystem responses towards anthropogenic and climatic stressors. Further, the effects of people’s resource use patterns and current governance are also elaborated. At the end of the chapter, we summarize several important indicators that reflect the current state, indicating the need for the decision support system as an evidence-based management aid tool.

摘要
