In the previous two chapters, we examined the crucial role that both functional and physical components, or nodes, play in the success of a mission network. We modeled physical nodes, typically specific systems, as the enablers, which are necessary to execute functional tasks, where the mission network is represented by a series of functional tasks that must be completed in sequence. In short, the physical nodes are nouns, and the functional nodes are verbs. The degradation of physical nodes ultimately leads to the degradation of the functional nodes they support and consequently the overall effectiveness of the mission network.
