This chapter introduces the integration of generative AI (GenAI) in higher education, setting the foundation for the rest of the book. It first presents the overview of GenAI in academia focusing on opportunities and ethical challenges, highlighting the need for balancing innovation with academic integrity. The chapter then provides a comparative analysis of how three universities—University College London (UCL), Harvard University, and Gisma University of Applied Sciences—are structuring GenAI adoption, emphasizing flexible policies, assessment redesign, and transparent communication with students. Building on the practices of many universities, the chapter proposes a framework that categorizes GenAI integration across courses and assignments into four quadrants: experimental integration, guarded exploration, opportunistic usage, and traditional approach. The GenAI practices of the Multidisciplinary Research Centre for Innovations in SMEs (MrciS) at Gisma University of Applied Sciences fall under experimental integration. This chapter offers a structured lens for understanding the successfully applied approaches to GenAI adoption and sets the foundation for the GenAI integration approaches as applied across different courses, as well as monitoring, evaluation, and impact analysis explored in subsequent chapters.

摘要
