The Role of Religion and Spirituality in Body and Mind
摘要
Religious cognitions and behaviors effectively deal with stressful events. Religious involvement may promote better health by enhancing feelings of self-esteem, efficacy, or perception of control; promoting constructive coping; and enhancing social support. Participation in religious communities may promote mental and physical well-being by regulating health-related behaviors. Spirituality such as praying for others is a source of social support. Religion/spirituality is associated with reduced depression and anxiety, and increased longevity. Religion/spirituality may give depressed patients with physical diseases a sense of purpose and meaning in life despite their health problems. Meaning-centered group psychotherapy may help patients with advanced cancer search for meaning and purpose and enhance a sense of peace in their lives. Clinicians can play a crucial role in spiritual assessment and making pastoral care referrals.
