Introduction

The introductory chapter, defining the concept and issues related to dams, development, and environmental flow, provides the historical background of the research across the world. Different approaches to measuring the environmental flow and its restoration are reviewed in the global context. Moreover, the progress of the present research in the global context is examined with an emphasis on the developments in Southeast Asia. Finally, this chapter intends to portray the necessity of carrying out this piece of work in the context of the Damodar River Basin (DRB).
