Life and Work of Betty A. Reardon: Reflections and Remembrances
摘要
When this book was being planned and co-editors Mehdi and Meyer approached some of the outstanding peace academics of our time and persuaded them to tell their story, they knew that their study wouldn’t be complete without a write-up from Betty Reardon. However, they were saddened to learn that she was not well enough to write and offer a personal account of her life, struggle, and contribution as a peace educator, researcher, institution builder, and activist. They therefore sought permission for interview, which she graciously granted. It was then planned that the interview would be spread over different sessions to ensure that she won’t be exhausted. As such, the conversation began and it was facilitated by two very close associates of Reardon and leading peace academics: Magnus Haavelsrud and Tony Jenkins. In addition, her long-time dialogues with co-editor Meyer led to a written exchange at the time of the 50th anniversary of the Peace Education Commission of IPRA, which she and Magnus agreed could be published here. However, as this book was being prepared, she passed away on November 3, 2023, and the world lost one of its most iconic and important peace educators. This chapter by five co-authors, who knew her closely, is an attempt to pay tribute to her. It offers a brief on her life and work and shares precious memories and reflections.
