Through history across culture and geography, eminent philosophers, scholars, and educators have all pondered a singular major concern: How can we diminish violence and oppression, and build just and peaceful societies? Such ponderings have often led to theories, practices, and the birth and flourishing of new ideas and perspectives, projections of new futures, and the launching of titanic movements for peace, justice, and social change. Entire disciplines have developed in search of deepening understanding: the advent of modern sociology, an orientation toward political economy, the flourishing of sub-fields and branches of philosophy and other academic disciplines. Out of these developments sprung forth the inter-disciplinary study of the causes and preventions of human conflict, what has come to be known as peace research and peace studies. Just over fifty years ago, peace education—the praxis that enable peace research to grow and breathe in everyday classrooms, language, and corner of the globe imaginable—was added to the formal and informal academic mix.
