Conclusion
摘要
The conclusion summarises the book’s key findings, highlighting their contribution to the advancement of theories of representation. It outlines promising avenues for future research that build on these insights. Finally, it places the results within the context of current political debates, where the willingness to accept compromise as a necessary aspect of government in proportional systems appears to be gradually diminishing. This emphasises the ongoing tension between compromise and representation as a pertinent political issue. The analyses in this book reveal that compromise shapes the representation process very early on in parliament. However, leaving compromise entirely until the policy selection stage, when it is necessary to achieve legislative majorities, has proven unproductive too. The rise in government failures due to an inability to reach compromises, coupled with the hardening of public debates, illustrates this trend. Thus, while both dissent and compromise are essential elements of a healthy democracy, achieving the right balance between them remains a core challenge.
