Excellium is a psychological visual novel designed to foster reflection and raise awareness about mental health challenges faced by university students. Inspired by Squid Game, our game explores positive discomfort as a narrative strategy to provoke reflection around issues such as anxiety, burnout, and isolation. In this short paper, we describe the game’s design process and report findings from a pilot study with twelve university students using the Mini Player Experience Inventory (Mini-PXI). Participants reported high levels of immersion, curiosity, and ease of control. Open-ended responses indicated that players interpreted the game’s themes as relevant to student life and mental health struggles, highlighting Excellium’s potential as a meaningful tool for emotional engagement and reflection.
