In my opinion, the term whistleblowing is a misnomer. By revealing the truth, aka, standing up for your patients and sharing what you know to be true, you are fulfilling your Hippocratic Oath of first doing no harm. This is not a unique situation for women in surgery, as all physicians have an obligation to follow their moral compass rather than going along to get along. It takes courage and moral fiber to do the right things when there is pressure from administrative leadership to conform. Telling your health system that they have opportunities for improvement in how they do what they do should be met with open arms. When they refuse to disclose the truth, there is but one choice: “to thine own self be true”. “Whistleblowing is the activity of a person, often an employee, revealing information about activity within a private or public organization that is deemed illegal, immoral, illicit, unsafe, or fraudulent.” Until you are confronted personally with a situation that requires you to flex and exercise your moral compass, you may never know what it takes to blow that whistle.
