The surgical field has changed over my career. In my residency program, at the time of graduation, there were two female residents. Today, more than 50% of current surgical residents are female. Being a positive male mentor can create a supportive and respectful environment that empowers their female mentees to thrive in their chosen surgical field. Creating a supportive, inclusive training culture requires, as most things do in our world, trust, open communication, and attention to detail.
