Family planning as a surgeon presents with a unique set of circumstances, especially for the female surgeon who must endure the demands of surgical training during peak reproductive age, bias of pregnancy, and parenthood in the years that follow. Even as more women enter medical school, the perspective of support for family planning from the surgical specialties is limited and may impact specialty choice. Currently, most surgeons delay childbearing leading to more issues with fertility compared to the general population.
