The textile industry is one of the most energy intensive sectors globally. A large part of the energy needs in this sector is conventionally sourced through electricity and thermal pipelines. With increasing climate awareness and the need to reduce carbon emissions, the sector is undergoing transformation by adopting renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower. This chapter explains the energy requirement in the textile manufacturing process for various types of yarn and fibres, and the need to shift to renewable options not just as a measure of green initiative but also to boost the quantity and quality of production significantly. The chapter highlights the textile industry in India—one of the largest textile manufacturers in the world and explores the cost benefit analysis between traditional and renewable energy sources.

摘要
