Parties will not fully disappear, but there are some realistic options for reducing the negative results of political parties and partisanship. States can reduce their influence by preserving nonpartisan elections where they already exist and expanding ballot access for independent candidates. Other strategies, such as ranked-choice voting and improved civic education, are also considered. Partisanship will most likely remain a persistent feature of American politics, but from time to time, states should experiment with new strategies to encourage nonpartisanship in order to revitalize representative democracy.
