The Gendered Impacts of a Parent’s Incarceration on Girls
摘要
The imprisonment of a household member is one of ten Adverse Childhood Experiences known to have a significant impact on long-term health and well-being. Despite this evidence, and the information and recommendations that come out of several research papers and reports that have been produced about the issue at regional and global levels, in Latin America and the Caribbean, where an estimate of 3.5 million children and youth have parents in prison, there are only few programs and policies that address the specific needs of this group and their families. As a result, these children live their lives carrying the burden of having a relative in prison. This might mean that most of these children live facing stigma and discrimination, in households with added financial constraints, having no or limited contact with their incarcerated relative and with few people that offer them support and accompaniment. For those who are adolescents, this situation might mean that they have to stop going to school stop going to school and start start playing adult roles like working, doing household chores, or having to care for their siblings. This is particularly the case for adolescent girls, who, because of this situation, have to start playing a “mothering role” or have to start “living a life that they did not choose,” as a girl from Argentina shared back in 2016. In this chapter, of we’ll, dig deeper into this issue based on the testimonies of three youths, one from South America, one from Central America, and one from the Caribbean, who have experienced this when they were children or youths. Their testimonies will be analyzed and compared with the results of different papers and recommendations about this issue, adding a gender perspective to the analysis. The objective is to shed some light on these specific situations, to analyze about the support these now adults had when they were children and were going through this situation and how they think things can be improved so that other children might not face the same challenges.
