A Great Ending to a Bad Start
摘要
In late November 1520, despite the desertion of the San Antonio, Magellan pressed on with only three ships through the newly found strait. Determined to safeguard his reputation, he first convened his officers for a council, demanding written opinions to counter accusations that he ignored advice. San Martín, the fleet’s astronomer, urged caution, but Magellan resolved to continue nonetheless. Progressing northwest, the strait widened until, on November 28th, the fleet finally emerged into the open seas. The long-sought passage to the Pacific was real.
