A Rougher Atlantic Crossing
摘要
In Tenerife, Magellan learned of plots against him by Spanish captains who resented serving under a Portuguese leader. Juan de Cartagena, protected by influential relatives, challenged Magellan’s authority repeatedly during the Atlantic crossing. Eventually, Magellan arrested him during a formal gathering, ending his defiance and restoring order. By mid-December 1519, the fleet reached Rio de Janeiro with discipline reasserted, though tensions among the Spanish officers lingered.
