The Ambush
摘要
After Magellan’s death, the expedition tried to reorganize under Barbosa and Serrano as new captains. But, with Magellan gone, former allies crumbled. On May 1st, 1521, Humabon, Cebu’s leader invited the Spaniards to a ceremonial feast. Over 20 men, including the fleet’s top officers went ashore. It was a trap though, and most of the Spaniards were captured and slaughtered. In one stroke, the expedition lost its captains, key pilots, its only astronomer, and Enrique—the sole man fluent in local languages—leaving the fleet weakened and leaderless.
