After the much-needed rest at Homonhon, the fleet travelled to Cebu, an important trading port in modern-day Philippines. At first, encounters were promising, with additional food, shelter, and alliances offered by local rulers. However, involvement in local rivalries soon led to tension. Magellan, eager to secure allies, overplayed his hand. On late April 1521, he personally led a small landing force against Lapulapu, chief of the nearby village of Mactan. Poorly judged tactics, shallow reefs preventing artillery support, and overwhelming native numbers turned the skirmish disastrous. Magellan was killed after being surrounded and struck down, his body left behind. After surviving several mutiny attempts and a winter in Patagonia, discovering the Strait that bears his name, and leading the most daring oceanic crossing of all time, Magellan died in a petty brawl.
