This chapter draws on materials from the municipal archives in Alicante and Cartagena, and secondary sources produced by on the town of Villena. Alicante, politically and otherwise, was very representative of Republican Spain and was extensively bombed 72 times in the conflict, including of its market on May 25, 1938. Following a discussion of bombing, the work of the Junta Local de Defensa Pasiva is examined, from the construction of shelters down to the level of neighborhood active committees to help neighbors protect themselves. The Cartagena and Villena, nearby communities, are considered for comparison purposes.
