This book has demonstrated Republican Chinese authors to be among the most vibrant, diverse and prolific cohort of self-translators in world literary history. We have explored the practice of self-translation among some of the most prominent writers at the dawn of modern Chinese literature, reckoning (as their late Qing predecessors had) with the place of Chinese letters vis-à-vis Japan and the West, but increasingly with the linguistic means to take the matter into their own hands. Qualitative and quantitative research in Chapters 1–3 shows their major contribution to the history of self-translation to remain virtually unknown to Western translation and literary studies.
