As Chapter 2 showed, literary self-translation involving Chinese is at least as old as modern Chinese literature (and when broadly defined in fact predates it), though it is only in recent years that the phenomenon of self-translation has received systematic consideration and developed a stable terminology. The appearance of ‘modern Chinese literature’ was, however, by no means a simple process and was itself deeply shaped by processes of translation.
