Empathy and Aequanimitas: Vital Concepts in Medicine to Understand and Bring to the Bedside
摘要
Empathy in medicine isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s a clinical superpower. The ability to understand and share another person’s feelings allows healthcare providers to connect with patients on a deeply human level. But empathy alone is not enough. There’s another, equally vital quality in the doctor–patient relationship: aequanimitas—a calmness and presence of mind under all circumstances. This chapter explores how empathy and Aequanimitas work together in caring for the ill. Empathy is essential for understanding patients’ experiences and building trust. Aequanimitas, on the other hand, gives physicians the emotional steadiness, strength of character, and clarity of judgment needed to care for patients in even the most challenging situations. Together, they form the emotional and professional foundation of exceptional medical care.
