Some situations are so challenged that there is more risk in continuing to care for the patient than potential benefit of maintaining the relationship. These can cause severe stress for the patients and the providers and generally result in communication breakdown and more adverse outcomes. While dismissal of a patient from one’s practice is an extremely rare event, it is important to understand the reasons this decision may be the best option and the most appropriate ways to approach this.
