This chapter explores the evolution of the ghost story as a literary tradition in Latin American literature, taking as an example the work of the largely forgotten Mexican author Francisco Tario. Focusing on his short story “Aureola o alvéolo”, it shows how the ghost becomes a mechanism for exploring ontological and poetological concerns within twentieth-century neo-fantastic fiction, such as experimentation with alternative models of space, time, and human identity, the allegorical treatment of existentialism, and the pessimistic representation of modernity as a failed process.

摘要

This chapter explores the evolution of the ghost story as a literary tradition in Latin American literature, taking as an example the work of the largely forgotten Mexican author Francisco Tario. Focusing on his short story “Aureola o alvéolo”, it shows how the ghost becomes a mechanism for exploring ontological and poetological concerns within twentieth-century neo-fantastic fiction, such as experimentation with alternative models of space, time, and human identity, the allegorical treatment of existentialism, and the pessimistic representation of modernity as a failed process.
