Music as a Symbolic Resource to Adapt to Tensegrities in Human Development
摘要
Imagine yourself in a new situation in which you’re feeling lost, feeling that nothing makes sense anymore, you look at your cell phone in search of some message that might get you out of what now seems like rock bottom. But there’s nothing new. Your fear is “confirmed”, you’re alone again, you didn’t want to be, but you are. You now realize that lying on the floor of your room, since you were forced to give in to gravity driven by an anxiety crisis, the walls seem closer and closer, your breathing is so fast that you can’t feel the air, it’s the same as not having it in your lungs. Anxiety has taken hold of you… You’re about to give up when you hear a piece of music start to play softly, gradually becoming a little clearer. Its calmness is noticeable due to its few beats per minute (BPM), it makes you feel a mixture of sensations, including feeling a little more relaxed. However, a significant difference occurs when you listen to a specific part of the song “Sometimes I feel like giving up… But I just can’t, It isn’t in my blood”, now you can feel the cold air coming in and the hot air going out through your nostrils. Just that doesn’t solve your anxiety attack, but it does give you a few more seconds to get up and take your medicine, call someone important, or put the breathing technique your therapist taught you last week into action. This scene illustrates how, in moments of great vulnerability, seemingly simple elements of daily life can transform into anchors of survival. In this case, music not only provided a brief sense of relief but also acted as a symbolic resource—something that transcends its original function and becomes a psychological support amid chaos. In this chapter, we will explore symbolic resources—cultural artifacts that, according to Zittoun (2007), play a fundamental role in human development. We will focus on music as one of these extensions, examining how it helps us adapt to challenging situations and face everyday adversities.
