Valproate sodium (Depacon) was developed and is used for the treatment of seizure disorders. Valproate’s postulated multiple mechanisms of action allow for it to be effective in several seizure types and also provide benefit in migraine treatment, neuropathic pain, and mood disorders. However, due to the requirement of frequent administration, the intravenous (IV) formulation is typically only used for acute situations; the oral forms of valproate are more widely used as maintenance and prevention therapy.
