Abandoned Factories and Industrial Landscape in Albania

The article presents the first results of the research jointly developed by the Departments of Architecture of Epoka and Federico II Universities. The study aims to highlight the legacy of the industrial heritageIndustrial heritage realized by the Albanian Communist Regime. The research hypothesizes that one such study may be useful in defining design proposals for a possible integrative strategy to the development future scenarios defined by the projects and planning tools in force for Albania. The study is searching for architectural complementary ideas that can activate spatial, political, and social dynamics born from the valorization of the industrial archaeological heritage legacy in the processes of urban and territorial transformation. The research aims to have an impact on the protection and valorization of the historical heritage and abandoned spaces, such as disused industrial areas. Its method consists of learning from the historical dynamics of the Albanian urban and territorial program derived from the transformations activated by the Communist Regime, in order to understand the values of the strata that express its historical evolutions. The tool used by the study is a documental analysis, conceived and developed within the research, useful for constructing maps on the interweaving of the socio-anthropological context and the topological characteristics that define the peculiarities of Albanian industrial landscapes.
