This chapter introduces the readers to the context of this book by locating it within the global and local milieux, while foregrounding the significance of understanding environmental issues via the media. It begins by underscoring the media’s pivotal function in influencing audience attitudes and behaviours through the interpretation and dissemination of climate change news. The discussion presents the nuanced power of the media and its intricate role, recognising its potential to mould public understanding and contribute to polarisation on the issue. Despite the complexity involved, the chapter underscores the significance of the media as a critical source of information about climate change throughout the globe. Transitioning from the media’s influential role, the chapter progresses to an examination of the climate change landscape in Malaysia. It provides an overview of research on climate change in Malaysia, shedding light on the vulnerability of the country to climate impacts. The exploration into media influence and Malaysia’s climate challenges enriches the reader’s understanding of the multifaceted dynamics surrounding climate change discourse. This chapter ends with the analysis of the interview data gathered from stakeholders in Malaysia, such as fellow academicians, private and government sectors.
