This chapter examines the Italian political environment and the relationships between politicians, social media and the general public with regard to immigration matters in Italy. It charts some of the anti-immigration messaging in the country, particularly with reference to immigrants who come to Italy from Africa or Asia. The chapter develops an analysis of declarations and social media posts by Italian politicians and social media users to demonstrate the way the immigration question in Italy became split with the arrival of Ukrainian refugees after the Russian invasion of 2022. The analyses reveal that while refugees entering Italy from Africa continue to be represented negatively, those from the Ukraine are viewed as more worthy of help and Italian aid. The chapter outlines the use of propagandising techniques that have allowed such polarising messages to become credible with audiences. In particular, it draws out the role that social media plays in creating a space where political messaging and the messaging of other social media users come together, coalesce and, as a result, more powerfully shape opinions and perceptions.

摘要
