Diversity of Life in School Ponds
摘要
Ponds are threatened ecosystems of high ecological value. They are associated to some ‘flagship’ species like amphibians or dragonflies and harbour a diverse range of organisms from different taxonomic groups. Ponds exhibit great heterogeneity that also contributes to landscape-biodiversity. The rising public awareness of ponds is reflected in an increasing interest in their use in formal education. The construction and maintenance of a school pond offers students the opportunity to gain basic ecological knowledge through a hands-on and contextualized practical learning experience, but also provides them with an emotional commitment to conservation actions. This chapter is based on our own ongoing experience at the pond of the Faculty of Education of Donostia-San Sebastian at the University of the Basque Country, within the Basque Network of School Ponds (EUS). We first present the main ecological aspects of ponds and address the diversity of organisms that can be commonly found in these ecosystems. We then highlight the educational implications, exemplifying some scientific practices and processes to engage students in scientific and sustainability competence.
