Companion Planting as Functional Diversity
摘要
Companion cultivation is a practice that is already implemented in many gardens as part of natural gardening. It is used in a variety of ways. In companion planting beds, crops are grown side by side to support each other’s growth. A companion planting garden fosters relationships within a larger network of animals, fungi, and microorganisms, supporting natural processes in the garden. Thus, companion planting gardens contribute to biodiversity. Private gardens have great potential for conserving biodiversity (Dehnhardt et al., 2021). Designing a school garden as a companion planting garden allows students to experience biodiversity firsthand and learn about the multitude of interactions between organisms.
