Examining School Persistence of Students in Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp through Cultural Wealth Framework
摘要
This study examines the factors contributing to school persistence among 33 in-school children and youth in Kakuma Refugee Camp, drawing on semi-structured interviews and Yosso’s cultural wealth framework. The findings highlight the critical role of familial and community strengths in fostering school persistence. Despite significant challenges, students’ commitment to education was strengthened by support from parents, siblings, teachers, and peers, who provided financial assistance, academic guidance, and emotional encouragement. This research offers a strengths-based perspective, emphasizing the value of social and cultural capital in shaping educational persistence.
