In the 1995 film Se7en, detectives David Mills and William Somerset track down a serial killer who uses the seven cardinal sins as motifs for his murders. Sloth, or acedia, is depicted by a victim who is kept alive for a year but whose body atrophies due to a lack of activity. The gruesome scene of the decaying body mirrors the nature and impact of acedia. Both body and mind literally rot as a result of this listless stagnation.
