Strategic Marketing for Sustainable Menstrual Hygiene: Promoting Eco-Friendly Practices Among Adolescents

Menstrual hygiene management is essential for adolescent health; however, traditional menstrual products significantly contribute to environmental pollution due to their plastic composition and non-biodegradable characteristics. With the increasing emphasis on sustainability in consumer markets, eco-friendly menstrual hygiene products, including biodegradable pads, reusable cloth pads, menstrual cups and period pants, are becoming recognised as viable alternatives. Sustainable menstrual practices among adolescents are hindered by factors such as lack of awareness, cultural stigmas, affordability issues, and limited accessibility. This chapter examines strategic marketing methods that can facilitate the adoption of sustainable menstrual hygiene practices among adolescents. It also analyses the consumer behaviour of young menstruators and the influence of social impact marketing, influencer advocacy, digital branding, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the promotion of eco-friendly menstrual products. The chapter concludes by identifying challenges in market penetration and suggesting future directions, such as data-driven marketing strategies, affordability models, and AI-powered awareness campaigns. Utilising sustainability-oriented marketing strategies enables businesses, policymakers, and social organisations to enhance environmental conservation and promote better health outcomes for adolescents.
