Building upon the insights previously presented in the book, this chapter reaffirms the role traditionally ascribed to democracy within the framework of American foreign policy, aiming to explore the problems that emerge as American dominance in global politics wanes and the societal consensus on the meaning of democracy breaks down within the United States itself. Condensing the main concepts of international order as they appeared in the early post-Cold War period and highlighting the nuanced differences between prevailing European and American perspectives on this topic, this chapter examines the processes that led to the crisis of the liberal democracy universalization project. It emphasizes the impact of international migration on public opinion in the United States and the persistent instability in the Middle East. Finally, it explores how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s response to Hamas’ attack in Gaza have disrupted the national security strategy outlined by the Biden administration, potentially complicating his bid for reelection in November 2024.
