From the Tatooine desert sets in Tunisia to the lakeside Naboo scenes shot in Italy, Star Wars fans can find, capture, and post their experiences in the physical spaces of film production. In 2023, I worked with fans in London who were engaging with the local spaces that had been used in past Star Wars media. In order to understand how to find and line up the landscapes of the spaces with the shots from the media, I engaged with fans firsthand as they shared their methods for finding the exact right spot where the cameras were once placed. These methods included bringing screenshots from the shows, following in the digital footsteps of fans who posted their own re-creations on social media, and engaging face-to-face with the local community for guidance and insider tips. I discuss these methods as they relate within the broader field of film, tourism, and fan geographies. I dive into what I learned from adopting those methods into my field research as well as the theoretical implications of film tourism as an extension of cinematic experience.
