Implications of Climate Change on Gender Roles: The Effects of Climate Change on the Socio-economic Development of Women, Children, and Young People in Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County, Kenya
摘要
In Magarini Sub-County, where natural resources serve as the primary livelihood source for most residents, the sustainability of these resources heavily depends on favorable weather conditions. However, the effects of climate change exacerbate vulnerabilities, impacting women, men, children, and young people differently. Particularly, women, children, and young individuals face distinct challenges due to their socioeconomic status and cultural norms, as they are direct beneficiaries of resources like water, forests, and farmland. Climate change has significantly reduced the productivity of these resources, leading to heightened suffering, especially among women, young people, and children. This desktop study aims to demonstrate the correlation between climate change variables and the deteriorating gender-related development indicators in Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County, Kenya. Specifically, it will examine variations in temperatures, precipitation, relative humidity, and water sources, among other variables, in relation to prevalent issues such as under-age marriage, adolescent birth rates, gender-based violence, access to basic water sources, food security, school attendance and completion rates, access to livestock foliage, and the general state of health among women, young people, and children. The study recognizes that the impacts of climate change can have long-lasting effects on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of individuals and communities. Guided by theories and frameworks for gender analysis, attitudes, and adaptation mechanisms, this desktop review will lay the groundwork for future empirical research and potential interventions, depending on resource availability. Specifically, the study will explore sustainable strategies for water provision in Magarini Sub-County. By integrating mental health considerations into the analysis, the study aims to highlight the interconnectedness between climate change impacts and mental well-being, providing insights for more holistic and effective adaptation and mitigation efforts in the region.
