Optimizing Weekly Purchases and Designing Standardized Food Baskets in Food Pantries

Food pantries distribute food baskets to vulnerable families, but ensuring nutritional adequacy and equitable distribution of the food under resource constraints is challenging. This study presents a mathematical optimization model to assist in planning weekly purchases and designing a set of standardized food baskets. The mathematical model maximizes nutritional coverage, minimizes distribution inequity, and accounts for food donations and budget limitations of the food pantry. Applied to El Rebost, a food pantry in Terrassa, Spain, the model demonstrates its effectiveness in improving food allocation while minimizing waste.
