This paper discusses adequacy and synergies when designing a supply chain for a low volume production highly specialized machinery product. The first objective is to study if the current supply chain design (SCD) was developed correctly by diving into the direct and indirect costs related to its production. To reinforce this redesign, the cost and efficiency of three alternative designs will be obtained by applying MESHAV. Once three options have been studied, a comparison of synergies, costs and risks is carried out and the best alternative is decided. Additionally, a decision-making tool is created to help with the SCD for new products. In the case study, we can conclude that if few units of the product are manufactured, the ideal strategy to follow is a SC with few suppliers, although this represents an increase in the direct costs of the product. Even so, for high-volume manufacturing products, it is ideal to analyze individually each level of the SC.
