Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) are distinct yet related conditions of childhood which describe the sudden onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms following infection. Symptoms of these conditions include obsessive compulsive disorder, tic disorders, and restrictive food intake. While these diagnoses remain controversial, research into the etiology and treatment of these conditions continues to evolve. This chapter describes the evaluation and treatment of a patient with symptoms consistent with PANDAS and discussion of the hypothesized pathophysiology of the condition. The current research into these disorders is reviewed, including areas where further research is needed.
