Encephalopathy and Seizures: Consequence, Cause, or Both?
摘要
Encephalopathy refers to a disturbed state of brain function that has numerous etiologies. This chapter discusses the complex relationship between encephalopathy, seizures, and the effects of epilepsy in the developing brain. Distinction is made between epileptic encephalopathy (EE), where epileptic activity is directly correlated with changes in behavior and cognition, and a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE), which refers to a collection of epileptic encephalopathies where the etiology (e.g. a specific genetic disorder) may cause alteration in development on its own, independently from that apparently caused by ongoing epilepsy.
