Breathing Retraining for Better Sleep: Practical Exercises for Children and Adults
摘要
Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is influenced not only by airway size but also by breathing flow dynamics and autonomic nervous system regulation. Effective management of SDB requires a comprehensive assessment that evaluates both structural and functional aspects of breathing, rather than focusing solely on anatomical factors. The Buteyko Method provides a structured approach to help improve breathing control by promoting nasal breathing, proper tongue posture, and targeted breathing exercises that enhance airflow efficiency and autonomic balance. This method incorporates protocols for assessing breathing patterns, decongesting the nose, transitioning from oral to nasal breathing, and normalizing respiratory function. By addressing breathing mechanics and autonomic regulation, the Buteyko Method aims to support airway stability, reduce respiratory effort, and improve sleep quality.
