Scholars frequently ask, “What is the philosophy of education?” and many have offered definitions and drawn boundaries from various perspectives. This chapter approaches the question in a different way: When people are doing philosophy of education, what is it that they do? This methodical approach starts from the practical level, focusing on ten methods of philosophical inquiry, as opposed to approaches to answering the question based on philosophical topics or issues, disciplines, canonical texts and authors, etc. One of the advantages of this approach is that it also provides suggestions about how to teach philosophy of education, namely, learning and practicing these methods of philosophical inquiry.
