Are Entrustable Professional Activity Frameworks the Future of Competency Assessment in Psychology Placements?

Professional placement forms a core component of the required competency development for postgraduate psychology students in Australia. While on placement, students develop and apply their skills and knowledge into practice. The Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), as the independent accrediting authority, sets the mandatory competency standards that graduates must meet to become eligible for registration as psychologists with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Despite these national standards, currently, each university in Australia maintains its unique approach to the assessment of organisational psychology students on placement. This chapter explores the challenges associated with this variability and examines the potential of entrustable professional activity (EPA) frameworks as a model to enhance consistency, rigour, and alignment in psychology placement assessment to effectively assess student achievement of competencies to maintain public and regulatory confidence in the profession of psychology.
