Green Education in the Philippines: Teaching and Research Initiatives in Environmental Psychology in the Philippines
摘要
Environmental psychology remains a field dominated by the Global North, where insights from Global South nations are rarely recognized and often marginalized. The Philippines, as a country in the Global South with rich experiences in facing and adapting to extreme environmental hazards, provides a context that has sparked the birth and growth of a locally grounded and globally oriented environmental psychology. This chapter aims to showcase the emerging and organic development of environmental psychology through teaching and research initiatives. We highlight how the integration of environmental psychology into university curricula and professional organizations could increase the interest of the next generation of Filipino environmental psychologists. We also outlined some of the locally relevant research themes that scholars currently pursue, as well as their commitment to environmental preservation that prioritizes justice and fairness. The future directions of environmental psychology in the Philippines aim to evolve this area into an impact-focused, context-relevant, and policy-oriented psychological science.
