Comics Is Dynamic Interplay
摘要
This chapter breaks from the book’s standard statement–response–reply format, unfolding instead as a trialogue between Frederick Luis Aldama, Benjamin Woo, and Fredrik Strömberg. Aldama opens with a formalist definition of comics as a dynamic interplay between visual elements that spatialize time and dynamize space. Woo responds by challenging the assumption that comics must be carefully crafted or inherently innovative, advocating for a sociocultural approach grounded in reader experience and industry context. Strömberg enters with a parallel statement describing comics as an elusive art form best defined by cultural consensus. Aldama’s reply engages both Woo and Strömberg, proposing a pluralistic framework for understanding “comicness” through creator intention, reader interaction, and production context. Strömberg concludes with a postscript that reflects on the limits of essentialist definitions and the value of example-based, purpose-driven approaches.
