One of the most important applications of artificial intelligence (AI) involves virtual tutoring through AI-based chatbots, such as Chat GPT by OpenAI, which has significantly impacted various sectors of society. In the university setting, the use of Chat GPT has been crucial, especially in academic writing. However, its use has been questioned for potential ethical breaches by users. This research aims to analyze the perception of the use of Chat GPT in academic writing among students at a Peruvian university. A cross-sectional quantitative design was used, with 554 engineering and social sciences students participating. The main findings indicate that while most students recognize the utility of this virtual assistant for academic writing, its use is inconsistent. Additionally, students expressed low confidence in using Chat GPT in the context of academic integrity. It is concluded that students’ perceptions of this tool are only sometimes positive across all categories analyzed. Thus, promoting the ethical and responsible use of this virtual assistant in university education is essential.
