Implementing AI-Powered Tutoring Systems to Enhance Personalized Learning in Higher Education
摘要
Artificial Intelligence Tutoring Systems (AITSs) are transforming educational practices by offering adaptive, personalized learning experiences. This paper presents the implementation of Chatbase, an AI-driven tutoring platform, at a higher education institution. Chatbase leverages advanced natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to provide tailored support and feedback to students. Grounded in theories such as Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, Self-Determination Theory, and Expectancy-Value Theory. AITSs have the potential to replicate the benefits of one-on-one tutoring at scale, which addresses Bloom's two sigma problem. The implementation process involved training AI tutors, named “Ask Maggie,” with course-specific materials housed in the learning management system (LMS) and provided by faculty across disciplines. These tutors were seamlessly integrated into the institution's LMS, ensuring accessibility and visibility for students. Comprehensive training programs equipped faculty with AI literacy skills to leverage the system’s insights effectively and align it with pedagogical strategies. Students underwent orientation to foster responsible use and cultivate a collaborative relationship with the AI tutor. Chatbase introduces numerous opportunities by providing multi-modal explanations, enhancing engagement, and promoting equitable access to personalized tutoring resources. However, challenges arose regarding content accessibility, LMS integration, and the limited scope of the pilot implementation. Continuous evaluation and communication efforts are crucial to facilitate widespread adoption and uphold ethical standards surrounding AI use in education. As AI-driven tutoring systems gain traction, rigorous research is imperative to assess their impact on student performance, diverse learning needs, and pedagogical practices. Longitudinal studies can elucidate long-term effects, while ethical inquiries can guide policies ensuring responsible AI utilization. This paper illuminates Chatbase's potential in revolutionizing higher education through data-driven, adaptive learning solutions that democratize access to quality education aligning with sustainable development goals.
